Thursday, March 28. Game 1: Opening Day. .

Rays 1, Astros 5 1
Record: 0-1.
Attendance:  Sold out:  25,025

Cy Young winner Blake Snell (26) was shaky in his opening day assignment against former Cy Young winner and wily veteran Justin Verlander (36).  Snell gave up three homers and all five Astro runs in his six innings of work.  The only bright spots for the Rays were Austin Meadows’ leadoff home run and Jalen Beeks three innings of  scoreless relief and five strikeouts.
It would have been nicer to start the season off with a W, but Verlander was too good and Snell too bad for that to happen on opening day.  We’ll try again tomorrow.

The Tampa Bay Times ran a letter to the editor today from a gentleman named Mitchell Turker from Portland, Oregon.  He said he was in town for a few days and read about our frantic search for a new stadium, which he hoped we wouldn’t find because Portland wants our team:  “So good people of the Tampa Bay region, please continue to not attend the games and to force the Rays to play in a dungeon a long drive from where most of you live.  And remember to visit us in a few years to watch your team play in a modern stadium within a few minutes from downtown.  We love tourists.”
